  The Nationhood of Luxembourg

James Newcomer
The Nationhood of Luxembourg

James Newcomer, professor emeritus of Texas University, knows Luxembourg very well. His book, The Nationhood of Luxembourg, comprises eight essays on such various topics as a first approach to Luxembourg, the personality and irony of nationhood, Sigefroid in the twenty-first century, Luxembourg culture within the European Union, 1996: a postulation of threat and possibility and the Luxembourg grammar of nationhood.

  Kann Poesie die Welt verändern

Alain Weins
Kann Poesie die Welt verändern?
Die Geschichte der Mondorfer Dichtertage
Éditions PHI & CNL
1999

This book aims to describe the origin and evolution of the Mondorf Literary Days. It takes into account various literary aspects, like the relationship between the Literary Days and some important participants, but it also traces the particular tendencies of each year's festival. Furthermore, it reflects on the festival's possible influence on the literary scene in Luxembourg. Finally, the specific German-French contrast in Mondorf stands in the centre of interest.

  Marieluise Fleißer & Alexander Weicker

Gast Mannes
Marieluise Fleißer & Alexander Weicker
"Ich bin stolz auf ihn solange ich lebe"
Éditions PHI & CNL
1999

Weicker was the first man in Marieluise Fleisser's life and together with Lion Feuchtwanger and Bertold Brecht he became an important influence on her evolution as a woman and author, as can easily be proved by some as yet unpublished letters. He was the man who regularly turned up as a protagonist in her early tales in the twenties and who also became of great interest to interpreters of the Fleisser prose texts. The relationship between Fleisser and Weicker is furthermore an example for the evolution of German literature from expressionist pathos to neo-objective austerity.

  Un Mirroir aux Alouettes

Corina Mersch
Un Miroir aux Alouettes
Petit dictionnaire de la pensée nomade
Éditions PHI & CNL
1999

"Go on a journey" with: Edmond Dune, José Ensch, Nico Helminger, Pierre Joris, Anise Koltz, Paul Palgen, Jean Portante, Guy Rewenig, Lambert Schlechter, Jean Sorrente and Félix Thyes. Through a patchwork of commented quotations, the following thesis is established: from one journey's end to the other, Luxembourg's writers discover a possible founding-myth of their national literature: the pleasure of being off-course. Portable roots help to shut out Babylon's horrendous noise. Nomadic thinking helps to get rid of the larks' mirror. In between two definitely provisional landing stations, the modern Ulysses learns to resist the charms of Melusina, who tries in vain to pull him down into the dormant waters of the Land of Cockaigne.

  Luxemburg - Menschen und Landschaften

Mars Klein und Olivier Ortolani
Luxemburg
Menschen und Landschaften
Texte von Goethe bis heute

Éditions PHI & CNL
2001

"A charming country, which Offenbach might have set to music. Lush forests seemingly out of a fairy tale; vineyards crowning silver streams; ripe fields golden in the summer sun, interspersed with patches of blooming roses.

Mighty factories which produce the best steal in Europe. Good wines, friendly women. And over all this reigns a grand-duchess, as young, pretty and charming as any princess out of a Hans Christian Andersen tale. I should have arrived in a coach, complete with trailblazers and drivers, leaned back into silk cushions, the face framed by a perfumed wig."

Daniel Varé. Italian diplomat. 1927 (transl.)

This anthology comprises texts by over 60 foreign and Luxembourg authors, from the end of the 18th century up to now. Arranged according to the different regions of the country and presented in a chronological order, the volume offers a rich selection of impressions, descriptions and opinions on Luxembourg. A chronological table places each contribution into its historical context.

  Der Aufstand der Luxemburger Allliteraten

Roger Manderscheid

(Transl.: the Luxembourg authors move energetically towards one point, zigzagging, like soldiers charging. But sometimes, in uneven territory, downhill, uphill, through bogs and meres, along forests and right through them, on a tiring march over a sunny clearing, an irresistible yawn overcomes them: they slip to the ground and fall asleep. peacefully, like children. lying on their back, with their quills aiming at the clouds. at the first far-away rumbling of thunder, they jump up again and proceed in their advance, from one strategic point to the next. by roundabout ways. sometimes even by secret paths.)
